Need for speed: a Formiative Comic Making Experience
My series “Made Monsters”, originally released as Top of the Line, was a wild time in my life for many reasons, but it was an important step from a deadline perspective. I had sold subscriptions through kickstarter, and for the first time in my life I suddenly had real monthly deadlines for my comics.
Top of the line is not my cleanest work to date, but it might be my most energetic. For those of you out there aiming for a career in comics, you will likely find yourself in an endless struggle between speed and whatever other qualities your are aiming to put into your work. One gift that a hard deadline provide kind of visual energy that’s hard to replicate on purpose. While I’m always happiest with my most recent works, I also enjoy looking back at a time when I used to whip out five pages at a time (using one pen and no rulers), not knowing there was any other way to go about it. This was the first time I was really telling stories for a living, and it was a whirlwind of a dream.
